About Ché Café

The Ché Café is a student-run all-ages DIY collective on the UCSD campus, housed in a 1940s Camp Matthews building (originally UCSD's 'Coffee Hut' diner in the 1960s) with a roughly 170-person capacity and an explicit no-alcohol, no-drugs, all-ages policy. The space operates as a worker cooperative.

Programming since 1980 has centered on punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, indie rock, and DIY/noise alongside political and community events — the room is part of the West Coast all-ages lineage that produced early shows from Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, and Rise Against. Zack de la Rocha is on record praising it as a source of inspiration and community building.

The Collective survived a 2014 eviction attempt by UCSD, completed major renovations in 2017, and re-signed its lease in 2018; its operating status is currently stable but has historically been precarious. The Ché remains the rare West Coast institution that operates entirely on a worker-co-op DIY model — over 45 years deep and still booking under-21 shows that the bar-driven scene can't host.
